King's Table - Ministry to the Poor

At VCC, we look to Jesus as our example for life and model for ministry.  He said, “I did not come to be served but to serve and give My life as a ransom for many.”  Jesus’ life was focused on helping and serving others, particularly those in need.  Consequently, we see caring for those less fortunate than ourselves as central to our mission.  We want to not only preach the good news, but also be the good news to people in our community.  We currently distribute food boxes to many low-income families at our monthly food distribution.

The Pantry is a ministry to our local community.  We currently open the Pantry on the third Saturday of every month from 10 am to 1 pm.  This ministry helps serve the needs of low-income individuals and families by providing a box of groceries and some extra food items.  We offer prayer ministry to the people who come in to receive the food boxes.   Each Wednesday we also have several volunteers that help with the pick-up, delivery, sorting and storage of the food for the pantry.

Ministry to the poor isn't just a program, but an integral part of church-life that everyone is encouraged to participate in.

Here are some ways you can get involved
:

  • Donate food items:  bring designated food items and place in the plastic containers located in the foyer of the church to help replenish our pantry.
  • Clothing items:  clean out your closet; take old clothes to Good Will and Union Mission Ministries.
  • Volunteer your time:  help unload and sort groceries received from the Mountaineer Food Bank and Union Mission each Wed. from 9:00 am to 2:00 p.m.  Volunteer to help process the food distributed by the food banks on each Wed.  During the week of food distribution, food boxes will be packed on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Lunch is provided for the volunteers.  Volunteer to minister at the Pantry by praying for the poor and distributing boxes of groceries on the third Saturday of each month. Come be a blessing and be blessed!

In 2006 we purchased from the Mountaineer Food Bank 11,431 pounds of food and other items.  Add to this, approximately 8400 pounds of food purchased from local markets.  In addition, we received about 81,143 pounds of food and non-food items donated by the Union Mission to this ministry.  That’s a back breaking total of 100,974 pounds processed by about 12-15 faithful volunteers over the past year.  Most of the volunteers are NOT from the Vineyard Church, but they all desire to serve the Lord by serving the less fortunate.

“Lord, we ask for more in 2007 - more food and other items, more volunteers, and more opportunities to present the Gospel to those in need - both spiritually and physically!  Amen.”
